Call For Workshop Proposals<\/span><\/h2>\n

The ECML\/PKDD-2012 Organizing Committee invites proposals for workshops to be held on the first and last days of the conference, which will take place in Bristol, UK from September 24 to 28, 2012. We invite proposals for full-day workshops in relevant and current topics in Machine Learning and Data Mining. The scope of the proposal should be consistent with the conference themes as described in the ECML\/PKDD 2012 Call for Papers.<\/span><\/p>\n

Workshops provide an opportunity to discuss current topics in a small and interactive atmosphere. They can concentrate in-depth on research topics, but can also be devoted to application issues, or to questions concerning the economic and social aspects of machine learning and data mining. Multidisciplinary workshops that bring together researchers and practitioners from different communities are welcome. <\/span><\/p>\n

Workshops are expected to cover a full day (3.5h + 3.5h, incl. two breaks of 30 minutes). We would like to encourage proposers to aim for a program that is both varied and interesting. Especially where the format of the workshop is concerned, we would like you to think about ways of going beyond the usual list of presentations of accepted papers, for example by means of panels, discussions, demo sessions and invited talks from outside the research community. Workshop proposals that show creativity as to the format will be judged favorably in the proposal selection. Furthermore, having ideas for follow-up to your workshop, in terms of for example a book or journal special issue, will help to attract more submissions, and make your workshop (proposal) a success. Proposals for half-day workshops will be taken into consideration if there is a compelling reason, such as combination with a tutorial (see below).<\/span><\/p>\n

Although we encourage workshops on novel and original topics, we also accept successors to workshops at previous ECML PKDD or related conferences. However, in those cases, proposers will have to motivate the need for another instance of the workshop series, and show that previous workshops have been a success in terms of submissions and attendance.<\/span><\/p>\n

Challenge workshops<\/span><\/h3>\n

A workshop may also include a challenge problem. The concept is similar to the Discovery Challenge but significantly less complex. The idea is to propose a problem for potential participants to address. Although, workshops are welcome to use challenge management systems (e.g., http:\/\/www.kaggle.com\/<\/a>), this is not mandatory. They may simply welcome papers that address the proposed problem. These papers can be presented in a dedicated session, to encourage confrontation of solutions and discussion by the community. However, the challenge should not dominate the workshop, i.e., it should leave enough room for regular workshop papers. Because such challenges require extra time to plan, we may be willing to provide early notice of acceptance. A few examples of challenge workshops have been organized as part of the KDD-2009<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Combined Tutorial & Workshop<\/span><\/h3>\n

For some workshops, it may be preferable to have a general introduction to a topic, presented by experienced presenters, before more technical or novel work is presented. To enable this, the option of a joint tutorial\/workshop<\/em> is available. In this case, a half day tutorial (3.5h incl. one 30 minute break) followed by a half day workshop (3.5h incl. one 30 minute break) would be logical.
